Mortar & Pestle – Grind Fresh Spices the Traditional Way

Why Choose IKIRU Mortar & Pestle Sets?

There's no substitute for freshly ground spices, and IKIRU's mortar and pestle collection gives you the authentic grinding experience with premium craftsmanship. From heavy granite grinding sets and polished marble mortars to traditional South Indian ammikkal-style stone grinders and decorative ceramic mortars, our collection caters to both serious cooks and kitchen décor enthusiasts.

Popular Mortar & Pestle Styles at IKIRU

Explore the full range at IKIRU: • Granite Mortar & Pestle – The gold standard for spice grinding, heavy and durable • Marble Mortar & Pestle – Smooth, polished, and elegant for display and use • Stone Grinding Sets – Traditional unpolished surface for maximum friction • Ceramic Mortars – Lighter weight, ideal for wet herbs and pastes • Wooden Mortars – Decorative and functional for dried herbs and seeds

How to Use & Season a New Mortar

Before first use, season a stone or granite mortar by grinding a handful of raw rice until it forms a grey powder - discard and repeat 2–3 times. This removes grit and smooths the surface. For ongoing use, grind dry spices first before wet pastes. Rinse with warm water only -avoid soap, which is absorbed by porous stone and taints flavour.

How to Choose the Right Mortar & Pestle

Consider the primary use (dry spice grinding needs a rough-surfaced stone or granite; wet pastes need a deeper bowl with a rounded pestle), size (at least 15 cm diameter for regular cooking), and weight (heavier is better for serious grinding - look for 1–2 kg sets).
